The Original City Walls of Norwich and The Black Tower - Carrow Hill 4K

Hidden down a quiet pathway in the modern bustling city of Norwich lay a 700 year old medieval treasure. As the traffic fades to birdsong you enter a lost world and are unlikely to encounter another living soul. The walls were built between 1294-1343 to defend the city from attack and no houses were built outside of the wall until 1779-89. The Black Tower was traditionally a watch tower before being used to house plague victims in the 16th and 17th century. The tower was made into a prison for ‘unruly, infected persons’ who were suffering with the virus to help minimise transmission into the city. The Bubonic Plague was a highly infectious disease, originally carried by rats before being transmitted to humans. Norwich suffered three deadly outbreaks in 1579, 1625 and 1665. Also known as the Black Death it would turn sufferer’s skin black in patches and cause swollen limbs. Compulsive vomiting and splitting headaches made this a ghastly and agonising killer. One can only imagine how much suffering occurred here at the Black Tower as carriers were isolated and hidden away from society by lock and key, before their eventual inevitable demise. Most victims were denied a proper burial and mass buried in an attempt to stop the spread. In paranormal circles the denial of a proper burial, accompanied by an agonising death is widely regarded to lead to hauntings and restless spirits. Whether that is the case here remains uncertain. The second lower tower with the wall running down the steps towards King Street, was also built as a watch tower and as a deterrent against those considering invasion. Both of these towers together must have formed a formidable and foreboding sight for those approaching the city walls. Gradually over the years these towers fell out of use and have become long forgotten historical monuments on the landscape. A large abandoned grade two listed house originally called “The Wilderness” skirts the ancient city walls.
