Russians have a problem with equipment at the front , in particular with self-propelled artillery. This was stated on air by Ukrainian military observer Denis Popovich on Radio NV .

"These processes began a long time ago - we have been hearing for a couple of years that the enemy uses towed artillery more than self-propelled artillery. Although self-propelled artillery is now one of the key elements, it allows for the mobile use of artillery weapons and early withdrawal from counter-strikes and drone attacks. The second thing that has been around for a long time is that the enemy lacks MLRS. First of all, large-caliber ones - not Grads, but Uragans and Smerches," Popovich said.

In addition, according to the observer, Russia has long been short of armored vehicles, in particular infantry fighting vehicles.

"It is not for nothing that the enemy is now using improvised means. Now there is more and more information that private transport is being requisitioned from the local population. And the enemy is trying to attack on these "Zhiguli", "Tavria", passenger cars. Moreover, before the New Year we saw a video about the enemy attacking on electric scooters, there is even such a thing at the front. There are especially many such cases in the Donetsk region, in particular near Toretsk. Therefore, they are saving armored vehicles. And saving is always evidence of a deficit," Popovich added.

Recently, it became known that Russian and Ukrainian forces launched separate but simultaneous attacks on different fronts in the Kursk region . As Forbes analyst David Ax writes, one attack may have been intended to prevent the other, but the results of those attacks will not be visible for several days.

"Did the Ukrainians know that the Russians were coming? Did the Russians know that the Ukrainians were coming? It is hard to say, and it may take several days before the smoke clears and the motives and results become clear," he writes.

The Ukrainians advanced just under two miles, but it remains to be seen whether they can consolidate and hold their positions, the analyst noted. At the same time, the Russians launched a massive armored attack, targeting the northwestern edge of the Kursk salient near the villages of Malaya Loknya, Leonidove, and Sverdlikovo. The attack involved troops from the 155th and 810th Marine Brigades and the 106th Airborne Division, with about 40 vehicles involved, making it the largest since the Ukrainian invasion. At the same time, as Ax notes, the Russians have been predictably attacking the Kursk salient with the same brigades and regiments in the same areas since October. At the same time, the Ukrainian attack struck a section of the front line that had been relatively quiet recently, and therefore could have been more unexpected.

"Some Russian channels have been warning recently about a Ukrainian buildup near Kursk and a possible offensive," says Rob Lee, an analyst at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. "But the buildup appears to have been far enough away from the potential offensive that the Russians have not been able to prepare a special defense.
