Droplet microfluidics are a technology that uses very small volumes of liquids to run an experiment. With these devices I am trying to measure the amount of electrolytes in our blood by using a small amount of blood. Electrolytes are important to monitor as they are found in very tightly regulated amounts and if they are outside of those ranges it can lead to several adverse effects. Current measurement tools require ~10 mL of blood (about two tablespoons), which is not much, but for new born babies or patients who are suffering blood loss it can be a lot. Droplet microfluidics require as little as 0.2 mL of blood, about hundred times less blood, and it could speed up measurement times significantly.
