Tools and Datasets for Understanding Socio-Environmental Systems

The significant effect of humans upon their surrounding environment is now recognized as a critical research topic. Yet the tools and datasets to understand socio-environmental systems are still in development. In order to comprehensively understand the complexity of current and future socio-environmental systems, we must look to both past and present systems. Computational modeling and long-term datasets are essential tools for understanding natural and human systems whether one is looking at the past, present or future. In this talk, observations from agent-based models of socio-environmental interaction are considered, as well as recent work documenting human land-use through time.

Sean Bergin is an archaeologist whose expertise includes computational modeling, agent-based modeling, geospatial technologies, long-term dynamics of socioecological systems, the spread of agriculture and lithic technology. His research has focused primarily in the west Mediterranean.
