Behind the process of creating a custom METAHUMAN made with UE5 and Blender3D

We were approached by a company representing the interests of the state with a request for assistance in salvaging the project. The previous team had failed, offering options that did not suit the client, and significantly delayed the deadline. We were given a deadline of 3 days, during which we had to come up with a new look for the character, create more lively and realistic animations and formalize the project into a high-quality appearance.

The task was to create a picture "no worse than Hollywood", as the project was supposed to be shown in movie theaters across the country. It is impossible to create a Hollywood picture in 3 days, but to make the highest quality project possible - that's what we did.

When I was challenged to create a realistic character, which can be customizable and must repeat the actor's facial expressions, as well as be optimized and, most of all, we only got three days! I decided to choose a tool that is efficient, undemanding on resources and very fast to allow me to make changes on the go and not lose progress.

The choice definitely fell on Unreal Engine 5, due to its ability to create a realistic and advanced rig (a system of bones that control movements) that can be animated using pre-recorded videos through a special software. Then came the challenge of transferring these animations to another model in Blender and connecting to the body and internal parts, so that the deformation would work perfectly with the facial animation.

Previously I had not seen anyone do a project like this, so the realization became my authoring method, creating digital characters with top notch animation.
