The railway line through central New Plymouth (and on to Port Taranaki) doesn't get a regular KiwiRail service anymore, and the only things that ever go past Smart Road yard are the very rare excursions.

In February 2024, the Pahiatua Railcar Society ran their Standard Railcar RM 31 up to New Plymouth for two rounds of shuttles down to Inglewood and back. Although a single-car diesel unit is a far cry from DFB 7010 and the Capital Connection coaches, I still liked seeing RM 31 in New Plymouth because this was her old stomping ground.
