When we see a scene it can be tempting to try and sketch everything, every little details. But often a sketch can be more effective and more fun if we simplify things, leaving patches blank and making use of 'negative space'.

In this urban sketching tutorial I'll demonstrate one technique I like to use for this - vertical lines to block out areas. It's really simple, but with a bit of experimentation can also be very effective. Pushing forward our main subject and making for a clean and interesting painting or sketch.

Simple tips, tricks and hacks like this in our drawings can be a great part of our sketching weaponry! And the key to understanding them is practice and experimentation.

The materials used here are a 6x6 inch khadi paper sketchbook, finelines and watercolours.
