Tunghai University has a history of over 60 years since its establishment. In 1951, Dr. William P. Fenn, the newly appointed Executive Secretary of the United Board for Christian Colleges in China, introduced the vision of 'Infinite Vision' at the annual meeting in the United States, garnering consensus among attendees and assisting in the establishment of Taiwan's first Christian university.

In 1953, the United Board in the United States established a preparatory office and a board of directors. They selected Dadu Plateau in Xitun District, Taichung City as the campus location and named it 'Tunghai University.'

The College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science were set up initially, appointing Mr. Beauson Tseng as the first president, making it the first private university in Taiwan. In July 1955, the first batch of students was enrolled. Over the course of 67 years, it has evolved into a comprehensive university with significant influence.

In 2023, the Times Higher Education (THE) released the 'University Impact Rankings,' positioning Tunghai University between 101-200 globally, securing the top position among non-medical private universities in Taiwan for four consecutive years.
