In this session, Dr. Barksdale will present a call to conscience and action to an audience he considers among the best and the brightest in pediatrics. He will address the important issues that impact the health care of children and beyond. Dr. Barksdale will reflect on his personal background in social justice and how it ultimately guided his career as an academic surgeon from bench, to bedside, to community, to advocacy. He will endeavor to galvanize academic inquiry, cross-culture collaboration, and the development of impactful programs in the realm of public health and social justice. He will describe how his personal experience with violence, from organic clinical (bedside) work coupled with civic advocacy and community participative research with academia, which led to the development of a novel pediatric violence intervention program. He views this as a paradigm for individuals to think creatively and collaborate broadly to address important issues of population health.
