Hello! I am your ENT Dr.Vignesh Gokul. The topic we will see in today's video is 'Otitis media with Effusion'.

What is 'Otitis media with Effusion'? In the ear we have the external ear, middle ear and inner ear. Fluid getting collected in the middle ear is called 'Otitis media with Effusion'.
What is the reason behind fluid collection in the middle ear? From the nasopharynx that is behind the nose there is a tube called 'eustachian' tube that goes to both the ears. The main function of the tube is that it equalizes the pressure for the ear tissue on both sides. It also ensures that fluid does not get collected in the ears as it drains the fluid through the nose into the throat and protects the middle ear. These are its three functions.

When there is a problem in this tube, as a result of it a negative pressure gets created inside the ear. Due to that there are chances for fluid accumulation inside the ear. When will this be common? Most often when there is a cold, Cold will get better but after that there are chances for fluid accumulation in the ears. We saw that as a result of the common cold there are chances of fluid accumulation.

What are the other reasons for fluid accumulation? If there are allergies, it can happen. For children who have acid reflux or if the food that they ate comes back up, the chances due to it are high.

Can this ear problem be faced suddenly? Sometimes after we have travelled in a flight or those who go scuba diving or deep water diving have chances of getting this problem. This problem can be faced by children and also be faced by adults. One of the main reasons for children not being able to hear.

What can be the symptoms for this? Most of the time, kids cannot complain of hearing loss because this hearing loss will happen gradually. So what will happen is they will increase the tv volume when they watch tv, or they will sit very close to the tv when they watch it, or when you call they will not turn and respond, or the teachers could complain that when they teach the child is making notes wrongly. So when there are such symptoms there are higher chances for fluid accumulation in the ears for kids.

When adults have this issue what will be the symptoms? Usually they will have difficulty hearing and they can feel that they have an ear block.

How can we prevent this? For preventing this, especially for kids, breastfeeding is important. Avoiding bottle feeding and pacifiers as much as you can is better. Do not make the child lie down when feeding. When you do that the chances of them facing this problem is very high.

Similarly, if the adenoid behind the nose has grown big that can block the tube, and due to that the chances of fluid accumulation in the ear is high.
