Not only is the importance of washing your hands tied to your health, it also helps keep everyone around you healthy. You should be washing your hands after going out to a public place, before and after handling food, after using the bathroom, and after coughing or sneezing. If you're ill, you should make sure to wash your hands frequently. This lessens the likelihood of you getting anyone else sick.

Washing your hands properly is more than just using soap. You have to wet your hands and wash them thoroughly with soap for at least 20 seconds. If you're not sure how long that is, try singing Happy Birthday twice. Make sure you get your wrists, between your fingers, and under your fingernails.
