If you’re a therapist or supervise one, especially if you’re traveling and taking Optum insurance, BIG changes are coming your way starting October 1, 2024. 📅 Keeping up with these new rules will be crucial for your practice!

Here’s the scoop:

🌟 Supervisory Billing: This is where non-licensed clinicians like interns can provide services under your supervision.

1. Optum's New Policy:
California, Colorado, Iowa, Massachusetts: Both in and out of network providers can bill for supervised services.
Other States: Only in-network, signed agreements needed by Sept 30, 2024.
2. Medicare Advantage Plans: No billing for supervised services at the moment. This may change if federal rules do.
Medicaid Plans:Follow state-specific rules. Always check local guidelines.

3. How to Bill Correctly:
Use the U5 modifier for supervised services.
Add the DQ qualifier with the supervising clinician's full name, credentials, and NPI on the CMS 1500 form (box 17 & 17B).
