Old-Growth Forest Walk in Finland (Patvinsuo National Park)

(4K) Walking in the Primeval Forest area in Patvinsuo National Park, Lieksa, Finland. Patvinsuo National Park is located in North Karelia in the Lieksa and Ilomantsi municipalities. It was established in 1982 and covers 105 square kilometres (41 sq mi). There are 80 kilometres (50 mi) of marked walking trails in the area. The park has bogs, former managed forest and slash-and-burn areas and some old-growth forests. Suomujärvi lake is located in northeast area in the park.

In an old-growth forest, trees are allowed to grow until very old, then die and decompose. This type of environment provides countless habitats for flora, fauna and fungi. Beard lichens hang from the branches of spruces and polypore fungi decompose fallen trees.
