Calendula
calendula officinalis

This bright, cheery flower has quite a few powerful healing abilities. This flower is part of the aster/daisy family. Its origins are from Europe and is not native to the US.

The only part that is used medicinally is the complete flower head ( not just the petals) the green portion of the flower has a resinous medicinal quality and can often be felt on your fingers after picking the flower tops.

Calendula is most notable for its external skin healing qualities but may also be used internally. It can be made into a salve, tea, infusion, or tincture.

Externally it is excellent for soothing & healing scrapes, bites, burns, rashes, eczema, and sores and can also be taken internally for wounds such as ulcers or irritable bowel syndrome (vulnerary). It also is helpful at healing and reducing scar tissue.

One of calendulas qualities is as a bitter. Bitters are known for being excellent for bile stimulation and production. This also means it is helpful for healing and regulating the gall bladder and liver. It is also soothing and healing for the stomach, helping with leaky gut syndrome.

Calendula is also an Emmenagogue, which means it can start your menstrual cycle if a woman is having irregular periods. It can also help with cramps related to menstruation.

Finally calendula is a powerful lymphatic simulator and immune system strengthener.

I will be using this sunny and soothing medicinal more regularly! It has climbed into my top 10 list.
