Kala takes the high line on this issue: "Traditionally, ukulele players have played their instruments without straps, opting to hold the instrument under their arm. Surprisingly, a very small percentage of players use a strap on their Ukes. Many ukulele players find the inclusion of a strap button (or two) unsightly and will not purchase an instrument this way." Having played ukulele five or six years, I find straps, strap buttons, and gig bags extremely useful to have! Possibly professional ukulele players or those with decades of experience might prefer not using a strap . . . but most pros I see playing ukulele use straps!

I suppose Kala would have us carry our ukuleles in gunny sacks, too, like Johnny B. Goode, since they don't provide those, either.

So, if Kala insists on providing instruments for rich and advanced players, or those who have to have a name brand, that's fine with me. The new ukulele market has caught up and new brands are serving the savvy shopper with solid top ukulele bundles that come well setup and ready to play needing nothing in the future.

Just to set the record straight, I own a number of Kala ukuleles all of which I like. These were purchased in the early days of my ukulele career before I discovered I could get solid top ukes for less than half the price of Kala laminates that included all the accessories I'd eventually pay big dollars for online or at my friendly high-price guitar store or music shop!
