Hey gang, Mr. Wellness here with another Wellness 101 quick tip. Let’s talk about social distancing…what is it and why is it so important.



Simply put, social distancing is the practice of maintaining distance (approximately 6 ft.) between you and other people for the sake of limiting illness. Your best bet is to minimize contact with people…period. That includes extended family. Remember this is not a snow day, the point is to limit your interaction with people because sometimes you can transmit illness even if you’re not showing symptoms. Work from home if you can, avoid public transportation, and skip social gatherings all together.


This may seem severe, but the alternative can be disastrous. The following is a graph of what can happen in a pandemic when social distancing is not practiced. The idea is to slow the transmission rate of illness to an acceptable level where the Health Care system can handle it.


So, does this mean you need to be a hermit for the rest of your life? Absolutely not. It simply means you want to avoid people for the length of time the CDC recommends. Utilize technology to check up on your friends and family to ensure you and your loved ones are safe.


This does NOT mean that you must be a shut in either. It’s perfectly acceptable to get outside for some fresh air and exercise. Social distancing is avoiding people…not the outdoors. Consider taking the dog for a walk, do some yoga in the back yard, or ride your bike to break up the monotony.


If you do need to go out for say food or medicine…it’s important to practice safe health hygiene routines like, not touching your face, wiping down any surfaces you may come in contact with an alcohol based sanitizer, and washing your hands thoroughly when you return.


Folks…it’s human nature to want to be around others. I implore you to resist that urge just for a little bit. And to my young friends who feel this does not impact you…not only could you get yourself sick, but as I mentioned before, you could possibly transmit illness to others like your parents and grandparents without showing symptoms.
