This is part 2 of How much is nonverbal? Exploring workplace incivility across cultures (What isn’t being Said: Book Launch 2024) (Dr. Leigh Anne Liu). This is part of the icEdge Lunch & Learn series.

Although there are many manifestations of incivility in the workplace, in this session, we focus on five specific forms of incivility to explore their cultural differences. In particular, we discuss covert forms of incivility, represented by ostra¬cism or social exclusion, and direct forms of incivility, including abusive supervi¬sion, microaggression, and bullying. We embed our discussion in the four domains of communication context – message, relationship, time, and space – to understand the meaning and manifestation of incivility in different cultures and make proposi¬tions to reduce incivility and to create an inclusive workplace.

We are excited to have Dr. Leigh Anne Liu, coauthor of What Isn’t Being Said back to discuss this chapter! Leigh Anne Liu is Professor and Director of the Institute of International Business at Geogia State University. She studies how culture and cognition influence intercultural interactions, including negotiation, conflict management, and collaborations at individual, organization, and national levels. Leigh Anne was awarded the Fulbright-Hanken Distinguished Chair in Business and Economics in 2020 by the U.S. Department of State, Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, and Fulbright Finland Foundation. She has been a visiting professor at University of South Australia, Hanken School of Economics in Finland, University of Toulouse Business School in France, Peking University and Nanjing University in China.
