Gullfoss is not only Iceland's best-known waterfall but also one of the most striking and impressive thanks to its double-tiered waterfall plunging a total of 105 feet (31 metres). Located to the east of the Golden Circle, Gullfoss has come to be recognised as Iceland's most famous waterfall.

Name
The name Gullfoss translates to "golden waterfall". There are multiple theories about how the falls got their name, including:
Viking treasure: A Viking is said to have thrown his gold into the waterfall to prevent others from enjoying it after he died.
Rainbows: The name may come from the rainbows that form in the mist above the falls on sunny days.
Water color: The water may appear golden-brown on sunny days due to sediment from the glacial valley.
Conservation
Sigríður Tómasdóttir fought to prevent foreign parties from acquiring the rights to rent the waterfall for a hydroelectric dam. She traveled across mountains and rivers, and visited officials in Reykjavík, but was unsuccessful. Eventually, the rental agreement became void and the Treasury took ownership of Gullfoss to preserve it.
Gullfoss is located in a glacial river that flows from Langjokull, Iceland's second largest glacier. The falls are formed by glacial meltwater cutting through basalt rock over thousands of years. The upper cascade is 36 feet tall and plunges into a lower cascade that is 70 feet tall.
