Exp.16: “Impulse Voltage Generator; Working and Waveform Recording” by Dr. T. G. Arora, Electrical Engineering Department, Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management, Nagpur (India).

Power system equipments are subjected to lightning over voltages during rainy season. This lightning over voltage is impulsive in nature. It has very high amplitude and exists for short duration. The electrical equipments are tested by standard impulse waveform before they are put into the service. As per Indian Standard impulse testing is done with 1.2/50 µsec voltage wave. This waveform is generated by the Impulse Generator. Impulse generators are designed by Marx circuit or Modified Marx Circuit. Impulse voltage can be measured by peak reading voltmeter and the impulse waveform is recorded by digital storage oscilloscope connected across the low voltage arm of a resistance potential divider. The purpose of this experiment is to explain the components of impulse generator, demonstrate the working of impulse generator and recording of impulse voltage waveform.
