NO FIN/NO MASK/FEET TOGETHER SMB DEPLOYMENT. Yes… Why? Well.. For better buoyancy control, for making it harder and to strenghten my muscle memory.
A friend of mine once told me; „As many instructors as many ways of SMB deployment”. There is something to this statement. I was once really impressed watching Garry Dallas do it in one of his videos. I immediately started using the double-ender as a tool for tightning the line which prevents it from getting entangled while preparing for and during the shooting. A splendid idea indeed! I also deflate a bit of gas from my BCD prior to shooting so as to be able to inhale a bit more into my lungs and better inflate the SMB (otherwise I could move up a bit – a thing I want to avoid). I refrain from releasing the gas from BCD when shooting from depths as even the amount from my lungs will turn out sufficient to inflate the SMB fully due to the recompression of the gas on its way up.(the video was filmed at 4 metres). Having inflated the SMB orally and having put my regulator back in my mouth I do not immediately start breathing from it. I only do it once I release the SMB as my breathing-in would increase my lung volume and make me positively buoyant (again something I want to avoid). When the SMB is on its way up I purge the reg and add gas to the BCD to compensate for the loss of gas that I have sent to the surface in my reddish container:).
I do realise there are many other nice methods but this one works for me well and, what is even more important, never failed me even once.
I apologise for the quality of the video but the visibility in our quarry is so and so at this time of the year plus I film the videos by myself which means placing the camera on a platform and praying that I stay in the frame. An additional exercise! Staying in the frame 🙂
