RS018 AKAI Tom Cat: Coolest Cat in Town (plus comparsion to Rhythm Wolf)

If third time is the charm, then AKAI owes us a kick ass drum machine, in the mean time, lets take a look at the Tom Cat!

It seems that AKAI loves puns so much that it dropped the then newly established naming scheme of caninae related names in favor of a crude double-meaning joke (as the Tom Cat replaced the Rhythm Wolf’s bass synth with ... toms!). If you are familiar with the Rhythm Wolf (possibly from this great video    • RS001 Akai Rhythm Wolf: Much better t...  ) than you’ll instantly recognize the form factor and will be able to start playing right away, as the user interface, the sequencer and controls are 100% the same as the Rhythm Wolf’s. What AKAI did change, was the sound of the bass drum (like a lot), the snare (more like a bit), and the hi hats (only very slightly). Also they replaced the percussion sound with an old fashioned analog clap and the internet’s most hated bass synth with some typical analog toms (‘piuu pauu powww’). These toms can be tweaked quite a bit and can also be used as a synth voice (which they basically are).

So is the Tom Cat worth the update, when you already own a Rhythm Wolf? I’d say go and check for yourself ;)
