Close to 500 soldiers under the African Union Mission in Somalia have been withdrawn since September 2017 when they were deployed to fight the Al-Shabab.

The Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi says this is part of a phased approach for AMISOM to completely hand over to the Somali National Army as directed by the UN Security Council.
