As artificial intelligence (AI) speeds up the path to fusion energy, Michael Churchill, head of digital engineering at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, explains what a digital twin is and how they are helping shorten the timescale to bring fusion energy to the power grid.

For centuries, scientists have built models to explain the world around us, often starting with equations or interpreting data from observations. Digital twins allow scientists to bring together the best of both worlds — using simulations based on equations to create a virtual model of a real physical machine, and then using AI to update the model based on observed data.

From fusion systems to semiconductor manufacturing, digital twins provide more accurate information at a faster pace, enabling scientists to make better predictions and test concepts and ideas without making costly changes to physical machines.
