Summary of the conversation

Tao Rodriguez learned to surf at a young age of 4-5 years old from his parents, who were both surfers. He grew up surfing on the Pacific coast of Panama in San Carlos, which provided a good environment for learning with its small, non-threatening waves. As he progressed, he found San Carlos a bit boring due to the lack of consistent waves, but it was an amazing place to grow up and learn to surf.

Panama offers a variety of surfing spots, with different wave characteristics on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. On the Pacific side, the waves are generally similar but vary in size and shape, with some offering barreling waves and point breaks. The Caribbean side, particularly Bocas del Toro, has a different wave pattern due to the different ocean conditions and seasonal swells from December to February/March.

While surfing is popular in Panama, with many people surfing in the cities and kids participating in contests, the surf industry is not as developed compared to places like the United States. However, there are organizations working to promote surfing and discover new talents through contests for young surfers, which has helped the sport grow in Panama.

Tao discusses the challenges of balancing his surfing career, competitions, and studies. While he manages his time well by taking one course at a time and scheduling his activities, competitions can be particularly stressful, leaving him drained and needing to study at night. However, he finds that studying can also provide a mental break from the intense focus required for competitions.

Tao recommends Panama as a great place to learn surfing, with many accessible and beginner-friendly waves, particularly in the Bay of Panama area where his mother runs a surf school. His goals include having fun while traveling the world and surfing, taking care of the environment, qualifying for the Olympics and the World Surf League (WSL) to represent Panama at the highest level.
