The historic grand old Church of Our Holy Mother Madharasi in the second line beach of Nagapattinam was built by the Portuguese in 16th century. The church came under the control of the Dutch in 1660. As they were against honouring the Holy Mother, people feared that the Dutch might damage the statue of Madharasi Madha.
Therefore the faithful wanted to keep the statue hidden safely in a wooden box. Since the box they had brought was not enough to place the statue fully inside, they decided to make another larger box the next day. Leaving the statue in the box itself, they went away.

Next morning they came back and found to their great astonishment the statue completely inside the box with head slightly bend on the right side. This miraculous event soon spread all over the area of Nagapattinam.

The miracles and favours that are granted by Her divine intercession are so innumerable that the people from all walks of life irrespective of caste and creed visit the shrine everyday.
