4K Aurora Timelapse Compilation from Fort Yukon, Alaska

This timelapse shows 8 nights of aurora over a 18-day period while I was up in Fort Yukon, Alaska in February-March 2022.

In 2022, I assisted the Loss Through Auroral Microburst Pulsations (LAMP) sounding rocket mission. I was greatful to be involved as an undergraduate student, traveling to Fort Yukon, Alaska to assist with ground operations. I was responsible for running two scietific-grade cameras aimed at recording high-speed video of pulsating aurora patches as the rocket flew through them. On March 5, 2022, we made the call to launch the rocket which traveled from the Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR) in Fairbanks, Alaska over Fort Yukon at an altitude of around 250 km. The rocket recorded in-situ measurements of the pulsating aurora to verify a generation mechanism that had only since been confirmed using proxy measurements from satellties and ground-based cameras. This mission would confirm the theory using particle data.

Many of the nights there was considerable downtime, and since I was staying on an Air Froce base with no WiFi or cell service, I had nothing better to do than set up my cameras and record some of the beautiful aurora that took place at night. I used all my cameras and available tools to push myself to create my first-ever timelapse film.
