The LGB (Lehmann Gross Bahn) Forney is based on the wonderful Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Forneys. Like all LGB locomotives, it's mostly accurate, has fair detail, is super rugged, and is a GREAT runner.

As an LGB "G" scale locomotive it is a 1:22.5 scale meter gauge running on a #1 gauge (1.75") track. All LGB trains were models of meter gauge locomotives until 1984 when they came out with the American Mogul, a three-foot gauge prototype. They kept the 1:22.5 scale, mostly, even though this was a three-foot gauge locomotive. BUT LGB used a very rubbery ruler when scaling most of their models.

In the 1990's when they came out with this Forney they really tossed out the scale ruler. As they didn't follow an exact scale they even shortened the prototype length.

The prototype was a two-foot gauge. In keeping with the large-scale tradition they always keep the gauge the same. Usually #1 gauge, and scale the model to run on the #1 gauge track. SO in this case the model should have been built to 5/8" to the foot or 1:13.7 scale. Accucraft offers this locomotive in that scale and yes, it's huge! Anyway, the SR and RL Forney is great model.

Today LGB offers a modified version as the Disneyland "Fred Gurley" with Holaday Red cars. Super train set! A good representation of this Disney train. Hard to find...

The Forney is a steam engine conceived, patented, and built between 1861 and 1864 by Matthias Forney. (others were also built by other companies that simply copied the original Forney. Some of the SR and RL were built by Portland in Mane) As a tank engine, it carries its water tank on-board instead of in a tender. The wheel arrangement was originally a 0-4-4T with 4 driving wheels followed by a truck with 4 wheels. Later a pilot truck was added making it a 2-4-4T. It was offered in many gauges including this 24" gauge.
