Part 1 in a 7 part series about Mole Health. Dermatologist Dr Stefanie Williams (MD) explains the method of checking moles.

"So what I recommend is that you yourself at home do a once monthly mole check. So there's very easy rules to follow where you can judge yourself already with regards to looking at colour, shape, symptoms like itchiness, oozing, bleeding, et cetera, whether that mole might need further checks or not.

You can obviously do your arms, your legs, your front very easily yourself. It will then be good to either get a family member to have a look at your back and have a look at your scalp, or if you don't have anybody who can help, you stand in front of a big mirror, you get a little hand mirror in addition. With those two mirrors, you can also have a good indication and see your moles on the back, although it's, of course, better if you have somebody to examine them for you on your back.

So have a look at all of your moles because you will know with time if you have done this check months and months again what a healthy mole looks like, so you recognise your moles, and you think, oh, this is fine. I've seen that before. It hasn't changed at all, but if one of those moles then, say, eighteen months later, one of those moles changes, you will know because you've examined that mole so many times, you will know, oh, this has become more raised now, or this actually looks a bit funny, it has colour change, now has two colours instead of one colour.

That's then a sign that you should go and make an appointment with a dermatologist to have that mole examined in addition to doing a routine once yearly checkup with a dermatologist just for peace of mind."
