In October 1507, the Portuguese Afonso de Albuquerque met the envoys of Shah Ismail in Hormuz Island after conquering Hormuz Island. The king was not upset that the Portuguese occupied his island! Rather, he was more worried about the loss of Hormuz's tribute. He considered the Portuguese as his European allies in the battle against the Ottomans and Mamluks. In the same way, in the same year 1507 AD, the Portuguese occupied Qeshm, Muscat (the country of Oman was part of Iran until then), and in 1514 AD, Bandar Abbas, and then in 1521 AD, occupied Bahrain without any resistance from Ismail.
These areas remained under the occupation of Portugal for more than a century until Shah Abbas I (who still had no navy) with the help of the English East India Company (the next colonial government) by the British navy, captured Bahrain in 1602 and Bandar Abbas in 1614. And he took back Qeshm and Hormuz in 1622 AD, which, of course, went to England under the burden of granting half of the customs revenue. Iran's rule over Bahrain continued until 1783, "except for short periods of Omani attacks".
در اکتبر ۱۵۰۷ میلادی (مهرماه ۸۸۶ شمسی)، آفونسو دو آلبوکرک پرتغالی پس از فتح جزیره هرمز با فرستادگان شاه اسماعیل در جزیره هرمز ملاقات کرد. شاه از اینکه پرتغالیها جزیره او را اشغال کرده‌اند ناراحت نبود! بلکه بیشتر نگران از دست دادن خراج هرمز بود. او، پرتغالی‌ها را متحد اروپایی خود در نبرد با عثمانی‌ها و مملوکها می‌دانست. پرتغالیها به همین ترتیب در همان سال ۱۵۰۷ میلادی قشم، مسقط (کشور عمان تا آن زمان جزو ایران بود) و در ۱۵۱۴ میلادی بندر عباس و سپس در ۱۵۲۱ میلادی بحرین را بدون هیچ مقاومتی از طرف اسماعیل اشغال کردند.
این مناطق بیش از یک قرن در اشغال پرتغال باقی ماندند تا سر انجام شاه عباس اول (که هنوز نیروی دریایی نداشت) به کمک کمپانی هند شرقی انگلستان (دولت استعماری بعدی) توسط نیروی دریایی انگلیس بحرین را در ۱۶۰۲ میلادی بندر عباس را در ۱۶۱۴ میلادی و قشم و هرمز را در ۱۶۲۲ میلادی پس گرفت که البته زیر بار اعطای نصف درآمد گمرکات به انگلیس رفت. حاکمیت ایران بر بحرین «به جز دوره‌های کوتاهی از حملهٔ عمانی‌ها» تا سال ۱۷۸۳ میلادی ادامه پیدا کرد.
