This presentation examines how innovative design ideas are changing eco-lodging in the Global South, areas that include some of the world’s most fragile ecosystems and rich cultures. Instead of treating environmental and resource limits as obstacles, this presentation views them as a spark for creativity in architecture, technology, and community cooperation.
The Global South is dealing with climate risks, limited resources, and growing tourism demand all at once. Traditional hotel models often worsen the situation by relying on high-carbon materials, wasting water, and disconnecting from local culture. On the other hand, eco-lodges use designs that respond to their surroundings. They rely on local materials, passive climate control, modular construction, and water recycling systems to create solutions that respect both nature and community.
I’ll use two case studies, one in Baja California Sur, Mexico, and the other in Kerala, India - to show how regional innovations turn challenges into design strengths. In Baja, the focus is on adapting to an arid coastal climate using solar power and greywater reuse. In Kerala, the design approach emphasizes natural cooling, rainwater harvesting, and community participation.
In the end, this presentation argues that the Global South is doing more than just reacting to sustainability pressures. It’s setting new standards for how eco-lodging can be done. These design-based strategies show that when architecture aligns with community values, eco-lodging can succeed both as a business and as a model for ecological resilience.
