It seems for Linux desktop users with LibreOffice 7.2 there is now an open-source option which is credible for large spreadsheets, for the first time. The performance improvements are in some cases amazing. Excel under Wine is still faster most of the time, but not by much.


Also, both products did not crash once under the testing. When I think back a few years ...



This is a follow-up to the previous comparison of Excel 2016 running under Crossover (that is, Wine) against LibreOffice 7.0. This is Crossover 21 beta 1. Excel is installed from my Office 365 account (now named something else). Excel under wine is 32 bit, and Office 2016 is stable, I don't think Office 2019 is stable yet under Wine. Tested under Ubuntu 21.04 running on a 64GB Ryzen 5800x desktop with AMD graphics, in the xorg session, my "get stuff done" machine.


LibreOffice 7.2 shows dramatic speed improvements. It is now faster than excel at loading the large test spreadsheet and competitive in most of the performance tests. An Undo test is still very slow, but mass operations like row deletes of 60K rows, and auto fill over 210K rows are now a lot faster, and close to Excel.


The options for Linux desktop users working with large spreadsheets have never been better.
