Alright guys episode 2 of this Free Beginner SEO Course and in this video we're taking a look at Keywords. We're going to be answering what are keywords and do a bit of a deep dive to understand some important characteristics of keywords.

So what is a keyword?

A keyword is a phrase, a set of words, or something that people type into a search engine, that gets results.

Keywords can be one word, and they can be a whole sentence, they can be numbers, currency - it can be really anything that you type into a search engine

Now why are keywords important? Well there will be some keywords that will be popular, and by popular i mean a lot of people type in the same thing into google.

That means that a lot of people are looking for that thing, and if you were to show up for the results you could get a lot of people on your website

If you have a lot of people on your website, you can sell products, services, software honestly anything so traffic is business and we can find business by finding the right keywords!!

What about Short tail vs Long tail keywords?

So if you guys are just now learning about keywords - i’m sure you guys have heard of the term short tail and the term long tail.

Most people thing short tail and long tail, and think that has to do with the actual length of the keyword. but it doesn't - it has to do with the actual search demand curve.

So if we take a look at this graph given to us by the people over at Ahrefs this graph basically breaks down the demand of keywords on google and the number of keywords that have that much volume.

As you guys can see there's going to be a few keywords, that get a lot of searches this is called the short tail of the graph, and then there’s going to be a massive amount of keywords, that don’t get as many searches but theres a lot more of these keywords. This is the long-tail.

The actual length of the word isn’t really relevant - it is true that usually the shorter the word, the more traffic since it is usually representative of a product like shoes or couches.

So its really important to know this difference of short vs long tail, since short tail keywords are very popular keywords that get a lot of traffic and we will have a hard time ranking for those. This is especially important if you have a new website, you'll want to target long tail keywords that don’t get as much traffic but will be relevant especially if we’re new to SEO and our website is new.

Let's talk about search intent

Search intent is the actual meaning, and the intention behind someone’s search.

Why is this important?

Well theres a lot of reasons why people are searching things on google. and if we want to show up in the results, we need to understand that meaning to show them what their looking for.

we basically need to match the content that we produce on our website, with the intention behind people’s searches in their keywords.

so if someone is looking for recipe for vegan brownies, what they’re looking for is just a quick recipe to make vegan brownies, does it make sense for us to have a page full of vegan cookbooks where they have those vegan brownies? probably not.

What will make most sense is to have a little blog post, where we talk about that recipe and give them exactly what they’re looking for.

Understanding the search intent is essential because it will determine the type of content that we create.

So what are the different types of intent?

Well in the SEO space intents are grouped into these 4 categories

*Informational* - people looking to answer a question, looking for a helpful resource, looking for information

*Navigational* - People that want to be pointed in one direction or another

*Commercial* - This is a user weighing up their options, with a chance of making a possible purchase in the future

*Transactional* - people ready to make a purchase
