Every day we rely on energy for our daily routines. We turn on and off lights, watch TV, listen to music, and scroll through our social media feeds on our phones. Energy is the ability to cause change. The most common type you may think of, is electricity. The energy resources we use to generate electricity are often nonrenewable.

Nonrenewable energy resources are those that aren’t able to be replaced. These type of resources are known as fossil fuels. These include coal, oil, and natural gas that formed from the remains of plants and other organisms that were buried and altered over millions of years.

These materials are used in different ways. Coal is usually used to generate electricity. Oil is used to produce gasoline and other fuels, as an engine lubricant, and to make plastics, shingles, and other products. Natural gases heat buildings and are used as a source of sulfur.

Nonrenewable resources are limited and can’t be used sustainably. Right now, the world population is dependent on these resources as our primary source of energy. About 80% of the energy used globally each year come from fossil fuels.

The largest risk of using fossil fuels comes with pollution of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere, contributing to higher average global temperatures.

A growing number of countries are now focused on working towards using renewable, clean energy resources moving forward into the future.
