STORYLINE
Disease prevention operations have been stepped-up on Saturday in an attempt to halt the spread of flood-related illnesses across northern India.
In Uttar Pradesh, villagers have been spraying disinfectant throughout the town's buildings to stave off a disease epidemic, following two weeks of monsoon rains and flooding.
A health agency official said that affected villages don't have adequate supplies of medicines and clean drinking water was running low.
Doctors have treated at least 1,500 people in Uttar Pradesh for diarrhoea in the past 10 days, said the director-general of the state's health services.
It is estimated that more than 22-thousand people will suffer with waterborne disease.
India asked doctors to cancel vacations and rushed food and medicine to flooded regions where disease has stricken thousands of people.
Relief workers said on Friday there was an acute shortage of clean drinking water and medical supplies in parts of northern India, where storms have been heavier than usual this year.
The monsoon season runs from June to September as the rains work their way across the subcontinent it is both a blessing and a curse: At least 2,090 people have died this year, double the number killed last year. Nearly 600 people have died in the past two weeks alone.
