Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, explains how former PM Sheikh Hasina's escape to India, following a bloody crackdown on student protestors in Dhaka last year, gave way to growing animosity, anger, and hatred among Bangladeshis — all of which is now being redirected towards India.

His remarks came in a response to a question at a Chatham House event earlier this month. A Bangladeshi man from the audience asked Yunus why, and in what capacity, India was harbouring Sheikh Hasina, given that Bangladesh is demanding she be extradited to face a trial for her crimes, including corruption and political violence, while in power.

Revealing details of his private conversations with Indian PM Narendra Modi, Yunus stated that despite his efforts, India had not responded to the informal extradition request sent by Bangladesh.

He added that the Modi Government was complicating matters further by allowing Hasina to openly communicate with her party members, supporters, and followers via social media posts and livestreams, exacerbating the frustration Bangladeshis feel due to the lack of closure vis-à-vis bringing the former PM to justice.
