Kohei Shitara, MD, National Cancer Center Hospital East, Kashiwa, Japan, comments on the evolving treatment strategies for locally advanced gastric and gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) cancers, highlighting the differences in perioperative treatment approaches between Western and Asian countries. Recent studies from Asian groups have shown promising results with perioperative chemotherapy regimens, and the upcoming checkpoint inhibitor trial may establish a new global standard of care. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer 2025 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
