The beheading of a teacher in Paris and the murder of three elderly churchgoers in Lyon by attackers professing to act in the name of Islam, has raised questions as to how the French secular state can address religious extremism. In this Religion Media Centre zoom briefing, Trevor Barnes is in conversation with Professor Jocelyne Cesari of Birmingham University, Dr Joseph Downing of the London School of Economics and the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Dr Ahmed Shaheed. Points were made that a free discussion of the problems of religious extremism is impossible for policy makers, because of the legal insistence that religion or ethnicity must be invisible to the state.
