With the recent surge of physical fitness and exercise programs offered to people with Parkinson's disease (PD) there seems to be greater awareness of the need for access to physiotherapy. As we know though, there is more to Parkinson's than tremor and gait issues. This presentation will review communication and swallowing issues associated with PD, approaches to treatment for these symptoms and accessibility to speech pathology treatment/services in British Columbia.

About Barbara Lang
Barbara Lang has worked as a speech-language pathologist in adult neurological rehabilitation treating speech, language and swallowing disorders for over 25 years. She trained in the Lee Silverman Voice Training (LSVT) method in 2008 and piloted use of this approach with outpatients at Holy Family Hospital in Vancouver. Since that time she successfully lobbied for an interdisciplinary PD rehab program at Holy Family Hospital which was the first of its kind in BC. Barbara also acted as primary investigator in a research study of patient perceptions of participation in this LSVT® BIG and LOUD program. In addition to her work with outpatients, Barbara is currently a member of a collaborative dedicated to improving services for people with PD across the province.
