Eighty years ago on 6 June 1944 D-Day Operation Neptun, a component of Operation Overlord swung into action as the Allies launched their invasion of Europe on the Normandy beaches, and Southampton was key to one of the largest ever amphibious landings in
history.
As part of the 80th-anniversary commemorative activities, a service was held on the evening of Thursday 6 June at 7.30pm to recognise and honour the sacrifices made during the Second World War.

The poignant service featured music by the City of Southampton Albion Band, accompanied by the Southampton Choral Society.

The Right Reverend Philip Mountstephen, Bishop of Winchester, led the service

A large procession then made its way from the church to Guildhall Square for the lighting of the beacon.
