Today, we are taking a closer look at one of the most significant development initiatives underway in Tanzania, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). As the third country in East Africa to enjoy modern railway services after Kenya and Ethiopia, Tanzania is currently expanding its rail network with the construction of a Standard Gauge Railway to replace the old and inefficient meter-gauge railway system.

In this video, we explore the six phases of the SGR project, which spans over 2,000 km from Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean to Kigoma in the west. We take a closer look at the completed and ongoing construction phases, including the expected costs and financing for each phase. Additionally, we discuss the potential benefits the SGR project will bring to Tanzania, such as reducing transportation costs, creating job opportunities, improving connectivity with neighboring countries, and reducing dependence on road transport.
