We Talked Watches and Cars With Spike Feresten at Monterey Car Week.

While in Monterey, we had a conversation with Spike Feresten, a man who admits that watches and cars are his "two favorite things." Along with being a watch and car guy, Spike is also a comedy writer, television personality, and now podcast host of Spike's Car Radio. His resume reads like a who's who of the comedy world with shows like Saturday Night Live, Late Night with David Letterman, and Seinfeld under his belt. We sat down with Spike to chat about what watch he chose to wear to Monterey Car Week, what he's excited about in the watch world this year, and which newer watch models he loves right now.

A 1931 Bentley 8 Liter Gurney Nutting Sports Tourer won top honors at the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, which signaled the end of this year's Monterey Car Week. As always, car enthusiasts were treated to a spectacular array of cars during the week's events, ranging from classics to exotics and plenty in-between.

Omega Speedmaster

During our interview, Spike had on his wrist a handsome Omega Speedmaster chronograph. But it's not the Speedy you're probably thinking of. His is the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Co-Axial Chronograph 44.25MM with a sleek titanium case and a dark blue dial and bezel. Spike reveals that the watch actually reminds him of a Porsche GT3 he used to own that was also navy but sometimes looked black. He also confessed that like most watch guys, he has a soft spot for watches with blue and silver tones, emphasizing to the camera, "If you make a silver and blue watch, I’m gonna buy it!"

Timex Q Reissue

Of all the fantastic watches to get excited about this year, Spike is most excited about the Timex Q Reissue - that's right, the quartz-powered $179 Timex watch with a red and blue bezel similar to the famed Rolex GMT-Master "Pepsi." A favorite among a number of Rolex watch collectors. While he originally bought it for his son to bring to camp, Spike asked for the watch back since it's sold out everywhere and practically impossible to find these days. After wearing the watch on a red, white, and blue NATO strap for a while, Spike had to (reluctantly) return the Q Reissue to his son but admits "that watch is always on my mind." This perfectly illustrates that a watch does not have to be expensive to enjoy, even if you’re a passionate watch collector like Spike.

TAG Heuer Autavia

While Spike is most definitely a fan of vintage Rolex, vintage Heuer, vintage Tudor and the like, he also loves some of the new TAG Heuer Autavia models that have come out in recent years. He currently has three TAG Heuer Autavia models and encourages everyone to "go get them" since they’re beautiful and present well. It also doesn't hurt that modern TAG Heuer Autavia watches are somewhat overlooked at the current market and prices are subsequently going down.
