Corn Moon is the common name for the full moon that occurs in September. Like the names of other plenilunes, it is traditionally rooted in the history of the Algonquin people, the indigenous peoples of North America, who used a lunar calendar to track the seasons. Each plenilune for them reflected a key event in nature and everyday life, so they gave it a special name.

As for why September’s full moon is called the Corn Moon, the clue is in the name. In September, the main agricultural crop for the Indians – maize, also known as corn – reached maturity, signalling the mass harvest and marking the end of the long labour of farmers.
