Toyota launched its most adventurous marketing campaign to date, to introduce the all-new, technologically advanced 2003 4Runner, which will arrive in dealerships beginning October 15, 2002. The marketing campaign centers around the world's tallest and most daunting peak, Mt. Everest, symbolic of the vehicle's ruggedness, strength and ability to follow in the footsteps of the world's greatest adventurers and guide a new generation of thrill seekers.

The 2003 Toyota 4Runner marked a new era for the 4Runner in terms of design and technological advancements. A larger build, roomier interior, increased power, and more efficient fuel consumption were front-and-center. Under the hood, Toyota provided all-new 4.0-liter V6 aluminum engines which boasted 245 horsepower with 283 lb.-ft. torque. Drivers also had a new 4.7-liter i-Force V8 option that could put out 235 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2003 4Runner was also the first mid-size SUV to house a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip center differential.

For 2004, the automaker added a backup camera to the vehicle’s navigation system. An optional third-row seat became available for Limited and SR5 trims.

The 2005 4Runner gains more power for its available V8 engine. With the V6 engine, a five-speed automatic transmission replaces the four-speed automatic, improving performance. Equipping the 4Runner's available 4.7-liter i-Force V8 engine with the variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) system and an electronic throttle control system with intelligence (ETCS-i) has significantly increased output from 235 horsepower to 270. Torque rises by 10 lb-ft., to 330 lb-ft.

The 2006 4Runner marked the fourth generation's mid-cycle refresh. The changes included revised front and rear bumpers, a reworked grille, new projector-beam headlights and LED taillights, additional chrome trim on the SR5 model and a smoked-chrome grille with tubular roof-rack and step bars on the Sport Edition. MP3 playback capability and an auxiliary input jack were added to all audio systems. In addition, the Limited model was further differentiated from the other trim levels with the addition of unique 18" wheels and a seat memory system.
