Himachal Pradesh, India, opened to the public in April. Constructed in 1850, it boasts European architecture and utilizes Himachal’s Dhajji wall construction for climate control. As one of four President's residences in India, it features a landscaped garden with rare flowers, trees, and a traditional sundial. The property includes a recently planted apple orchard and a century-old Copper Beech tree, planted by Lord Kitchener, known for designing Wildflower Hall. The trees in the garden exhibit leaves in two or three shades, changing colors with each season. With a stunning view of Shimla hills, including the scenic Shaily Peak, the Rashtrapati Niwas holds historical and natural significance.

History

1860: British official William Hay leased the building from the Maharaja.
1881: Sir Edward Charles Buck redesigned it as a double-storey structure.
1895: The ninth Viceroy of Elgin purchased the building, naming it The Retreat, Mashobra.
British Lodge: Became a vacation lodge for British officials, with their main office at the Viceroy Regal Lodge.
1947: The Last Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, stayed here.
Post-Independence: Handed over to the Government of India, designated as Rashtrapati Niwas.
1951: President Rajendra Prasad visited, marking the first Presidential visit.
Present Day: Presidents visit for about three to four days every summer, with the President's office relocating during this time.

The Rashtrapati Niwas in Mashobra, standing proudly as a 174-year-old heritage icon, sprawls over 10,628 sq. ft. as the official summer retreat for the Hon’ble President of India. This enchanting estate, set amidst the serene landscape of Himachal Pradesh, comprises a grand main building, vibrant orchards, expansive lawns, and tranquil nature trails.

In a historic shift in 1965, initiated by President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the Rashtrapati Niwas was designated as the presidential retreat, transitioning from its previous counterpart, the Viceregal Lodge, which subsequently became the home to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study

In another landmark move in April 2023, Rashtrapati Niwas opened its doors to the public for the first time, offering a unique glimpse into its historical and cultural significance. Visitors can book tours both online and offline, available from 10 AM to 6 PM. The last entry is permitted at 5 PM, and the tours are open on all days except Mondays and public holidays.

The building was originally constructed by the then Medical Superintendent of Simla, whose name is not known (referred to merely as Mr. C____ in Simla Past and Present by Edward J. Buck). The Retreat was taken on lease from the Raja of Koti by Lord William Hay. During this period, the local population called it "Larty Sahib Ki Kothi", i.e. house of Mr. Larty, as Lord William Hay was named by locals.
