With creating this Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), we reached a point where we can view binary buses as simple inputs and worry only about what operations we can perform on them. The control bits of our ALU will give us an easy handle to decide which operations to perform. Although this ALU is our most complicated design yet, like all things, it is much more simple when decomposed into smaller parts. I learned quite a lot from actually creating such a device, it truly feels like you have used simple tools to create a more valuable, comprehensible tool.


I made a small mistake in this video. At 10:35, after the last simple OR gate there needs to be a NOT gate to flip the output to be appropriate for zr. We want zr to be true if all the OR gates output 0. The NOT gate feeds it's output to zr.
