According to sources close to Buckingham Palace, the Queen has decided to remove Prince Harry and Meghan’s children, Archie and Lilibet, from their place in the line of succession.

Let me give you some background as to why this is such a significant move. As the grandchildren of the monarch, Harry and Meghan’s children were in the line of succession for the British throne. Archie, born in 2019, was seventh in line, while Lilibet, born last year, was eighth. Their places in the line of succession were guaranteed under British rules of royal succession which give descendants automatic rights regardless of personal actions.

However, it now seems like Buckingham Palace is directly challenging those rules of succession in an unprecedented move. Sources indicate the decision comes as talks of a potential divorce between Harry and Meghan heat up. Buckingham Palace is said to believe a divorce is now all but inevitable within the next year or so.

And that’s where the shift in the line of succession comes in. By precedent, children of divorced royals could normally still remain in the line of succession. But given the severity of Harry and Meghan’s falling out with the rest of the family, Buckingham Palace is looking to set a new precedent here. They do not believe Harry and Meghan’s children should retain their places if the couple proceeds with a divorce.
