A regular performer on Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion, Greg Brown hails from rural Iowa. The son of an electric guitar-playing mother and a preacher father, he was raised on music and gospel. His songs often ring praises of an unpretentious rural life, eschewing the trappings of yuppie, big city dwelling. Brown’s honest sound portraits of ordinary people are not always gentle but are never condescending as he sings of the heart and the heartland. His gruff, growl of a voice can bring forth ironic twists or comforting tenderness as he draws from his own experiences as well as those of grandparents, parents and friends in telling his tales.

Brown also writes poetry, citing the romantic poets, especially William Blake, as influences and this style is evident in much of his songwriting. With a well-deserved reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter, Brown has written hit songs for Willie Nelson and Carlos Santana and after recording eight albums on the Red House label that he founded, Brown is modest about his calling and describes it as “Just music. I try and keep a good beat, tell a good story, sing as good as I can, and hope for the best”.
