In Nagaland’s Kiphire district, the remote village of Mimi is home to one of the state’s oldest crafts — traditional hand pottery. Once practiced by almost every household, the skill is now held by only a few elderly women. Among them is Nuokho, who learned by watching her mother and mother-in-law. Pottery in Mimi has always been a woman’s craft, though men help by collecting clay and soil from the forest.

The process involves grinding red and grey clay, mixing it with water, shaping the pots by hand, and firing them under hay and wood. The designs often come from old tattoo patterns once worn by women of the Yimkhiung tribe.

With fewer people able to make pots, the International Border Areas People’s Welfare Organization (IBAPWO) has begun efforts to revive the art. Backed by Roots to Branches, the group held a workshop where older women taught younger villagers. The pots made there were marked “Made in Mimi.”

For many women, pottery is both income and heritage. As younger villagers learn the skill, Mimi hopes to keep its pottery tradition alive — a quiet effort to hold on to a piece of its cultural identity.
