Is the Cradle Position Safe for My Baby?

At the start of the video, you can see the baby in a good position, with their head clearly visible. However, by the end of the video, the baby has fallen asleep, and their head has sunk into the fabric. Why does this happen? The stretchy fabric can loosen slightly, and when a baby falls asleep, their muscle tone decreases.

What happens next? The baby’s chin drops to their chest, they are no longer visible, and the fabric isn’t tight enough to support them. This could put the baby at risk, as none of the #TICKS safety guidelines can be followed.

This is why the upright position is often considered safer, especially for newborns. It provides better support for their head, neck, and spine, while also keeping their airway open and unobstructed. Additionally, it’s easier to monitor the baby’s breathing and comfort when they are upright.

And what about breastfeeding? While the cradle position isn’t recommended for newborns, it may be an option for babies 6 months and older. However, never let a baby sleep in a cradled position!

Important Note: I never breastfeed while doing anything else; my full attention is always on the baby, and I make sure their airway is clear. I only breastfed in a carrier after I had separately become familiar with both breastfeeding and babywearing. As soon as I finish breastfeeding, I ALWAYS place the baby back in an upright position!
