THE Irish fishing fleet is to be reduced by a third to make up for the five per cent Brexit quota cut.

Sixty trawlers will be decommissioned and taken out of business by the end of next year leaving just 100 vessels left in the whole country.

Irish South and West Fish Producers Association Patrick Murphy CEO said the Government is giving away one of the countries greatest resources

It means traditional busy fishing ports like Burtonport in Co Donegal, and Dingle, Skull, and Baltimore in Co Cork will now have little or no boats.

The Government is to pay out €63.5 million in compensation from EU funds to the fishermen who are leaving the industry.

All of the country's fishing groups agreed to the deal except the West and South Fish Producers Association. Precise details are expected to be given to the Dail in the next week or two.

The Irish fishing quota was slashed from 20 to 15 per cent by the European Union to make up for the loss of British waters as a consequence of Brexit.

The remaining 85 per cent of the quota to fish in Irish waters has been given to the rest of the EU member states.

So only 15 out of every 100 fish caught in our fish-rich Irish waters can be caught by Irish fishermen.
